Many of my friends are rum lovers, and I have tried numerous experiments on them with various drinks. Even when offered excellent Scotch or branded whiskeys, they always prefer Old Monk Rum. Their love and dedication to this rum are unmatched. Did you know that rum provides the best enjoyment when consumed, but not everyone is aware of this? Today, I’m going to share some insights on this topic.
Types of Drinkers
There are generally two types of people who drink beverages. The first type enjoys their drink, savoring every moment, while the second type drinks only to get intoxicated, whether it’s rum or vodka. If they don’t feel the buzz, they complain about the drink. If you are reading this with the hope of finding ways to get drunk faster, this is not for you. Instead, I’m going to talk about how to enjoy drinking, which I refer to as modern drinking.
Daily vs. Occasional Drinkers
Pay close attention: if you drink daily, there are different suggestions for you compared to those who drink occasionally or a few times a month. Remember, daily drinking is injurious to health. For occasional drinkers, mixing rum with juice can be an enjoyable option. One more suggestion is to remember that how you enjoy your drink is entirely up to you. Satisfaction comes from doing what you like, but knowing how to mix it for maximum enjoyment is crucial.
Understanding Rum
Let’s first understand what rum is. When you go to the market, you will find four types of rum: dark rum, white rum, golden rum, and spiced rum. Most of us usually drink white or dark rum, and I’ll focus on these two.
- White Rum: This is unaged rum. If it is aged, any color it acquires is removed to make it crystal clear. So, whenever you drink white rum, know that it is not aged.
- Golden Rum: Often found in the market, golden rum is essentially white rum aged in oak barrels for 1 to 2 years, giving it a golden hue. However, in India, most golden rum gets its color from added caramel.
- Dark Rum: This is also white rum but aged for a longer period. In India, dark rum often means unaged rum with added molasses to give it a dark color.
- Spiced Rum: Similar to white rum but with added sweeteners and botanical herbs for a spicy taste.
All rums are made from sugarcane byproducts, with premium rums being made directly from sugar or molasses.
How to Drink Old Monk Rum
How to drink old monk rum is a matter of serious discussion because every body want to a pleasant experience with every sip.
White Rum
If you drink white rum daily, mix it with water and lemon. If that doesn’t appeal to you, add juice or coconut water. The best way is to make a cocktail, which can be healthier. If you drink it occasionally, say 2 to 4 times a month, you can experiment more by mixing white rum with cola, half soda, and sprite for a sweet taste, or even ginger and tonic water.
Dark Rum
For daily drinkers, it’s best to drink dark rum neat or slightly diluted. Mature rums are easier to drink neat, but for Indian dark rum, mixing it with water and lemon is recommended. The best option is to drink dark rum with hot water, sipping slowly.
For those who drink dark rum occasionally, mixing it with cola enhances the taste due to the caramel, vanilla, and other flavors from the cola. You can also mix it with pineapple or orange juice or add soda for a unique taste.
Enjoying Modern Drinking
your drink is yours to enjoy as you please, but remember to drink responsibly. Modern drinking is about enjoyment, not intoxication.
